- offering residential courses for adults, who during the courses are learning and living together with their teachers;

- a pedagogical and general atmosphere of equal worthiness, openness and broadmindedness, which always respects the personal integrity of the students. The effect of the teaching must never be measured by means of exams or grades;

- a curriculum with no political or religious bindings;

- a teaching practice which always gives room for an open dialogue;

- offering general subjects which make the students appreciate the history, language and society of Latvia and which at the same time promote respect of democratic principles and cultural rights of other peoples;

- offering general subjects which support personal, creative, social and professional growth within the students.

The running of the school is financed by means of voluntary contributions from members of the school association in Latvia and Denmark, fees from the students and subsidies from national, regional and/or local Latvian/Nordic government.

Löftadalens Folk High School (Residential College)

On the site of a rock at the West Coast of Sweden, viewing the sea in the province of Halland, Löftadalens Folk High School is situated. The premises inhibiting the School (Residential College) was bought by the County Council of Halland 1965; earlier the premises were built as a seaside resort hotel. Nowadays the premises have been enlarged in the same functionalistic style they once were erected in the early thirties. Closest cities are Gothenburg (45 kilometres north) and Varberg (40 kilometres south). Today the Region Halland is responsible for the School.

One of the first courses in dyslexia for adults in Sweden was developed here during the seventies. Very early courses in Art and Craft, both shorter and longer courses in Fine Art, Textile and Ceramics were developed, with emphasis from the traditions of the province of Halland. Many art students advance further to higher education after completed studies. Also much from once being a seaside hotel, a course in tourism was generated during the eighties.

The general course in social and natural sciences gives qualification to apply for higher studies. We also give a more basic course with a pace accommodated to the participant’s abilities. The College also offers a higher dance course in collaboration with a study organisation in Varberg.

We are often working in smaller groups with the ambition, the participants will develop an ability to develop a skill for the methodology of project working as well as to stimulate to grow as an individual..

Also a large variety of shorter summer courses are offered, particularly during the summers and we also inhibit seminars and conferences of different kinds. A special network has been worked out for both young and elderly unemployed in order to give “empowerment” for rehabilitation and to find proper solutions for the needs of the participants. We are as much a junction for people of different ages and backgrounds as a geographical junction, as we are close both to Denmark and Norway – we are also interested in building international networks and we have participated in different international projects.
